The one downside with bag targets is that you cannot shoot broadheads into them, so you can only shoot field tips.

This is Morrell's most durable target yet. I have one and it has been outside at my backyard archery range for more than a year. I have shot literally thousands of arrows into it. I have even used it when testing some of the fastest crossbows and it stops every arrow, regardless of speed. There is no FPS limit with the Yellow Jacket Kinetic 1.0 Target.

It has two Easy-Tote carry handles, one on each side, which is good because this target is heavy, weighing in a 65 lbs. You do not want to be dragging this target in and out of the garage everyday.

It was during the peek of the rut and one of my resident big bucks decided that he didn't like this intruder in his territory, so he attacked it!

I had the opportunity to test the Morrell High Roller Target over the course of the last year. The first thing that I noticed is that it is much softer than the other top archery targets. The softer foam make for easy arrow removal, but it also doesn't stand up well to broadheads.

The thing I like most about this target is that it is lightweight, coming in at only 10 lbs, and with a convenient carrying handle, making it the best portable target in our roundup, but don't let the light weight fool you. This target is big on features.

The High Roller target is dice-themed and features six shootable sides. Each with a different number of circles to shoot at, which are about 3 inches in diameter,

This soft foam target stops arrows at speeds up to 450 fps and while it is made for both field points and broadheads, the broadheads really do a number on it.

Bag Targets

A bag target is a large bag filled with synthetic fiber that stops arrows quickly with relatively little penetration. The removal of arrows is usually easy.

Since it's a bag, archers have a large shooting surface to practice with, but the downside is that these can't be used as broadhead targets. 

Foam Targets

Most archery targets are made out of some type of foam. There are two types of foam targets: solid block and layered foam targets. The solid foam blocks are more weatherproof and durable. However, the ease of arrow removal is better in layered foam targets.

Homemade Targets

When I was a kid, we just used a bale of hay as an archery target. Sometimes we would draw a bullseye on a piece of paper and put that on a hay bale. Paper targets were simple to repace when they wore out from too many shots. That was the ultimate homemade target. Of course, we also made our own bows out of native wood, without fancy arrow rests.

With today's high powered compound bows, homemade targets are not really recommended due to safety factors, but if you choose a recurve bow, a hay bale may be all you need.

The lifespan of archery targets depends on usage frequency and build quality. On average, a target lasts around three to four years. However, when maintained, some targets can last up to six to seven years. If the cover of your target can be replaced, this heavily increases its longevity.

Foam block targets last the longest. The self healing foam target can withstand thousands of shots and can be used on a daily basis. Foam targets are also impervious to the weather, unlike bag targets, that will eventually need the cover replaced.

Can You Leave A Block Target Outside?

Yes you can leave a block target outside. We leave them outside in the backyard for multiple seasons and in all weather conditions. You will see some weathering after a couple of years, but the integrity of the target will not be compromised.

Will A Hay Bale Stop A Compound Bow?

Yes a hay bale will stop a compound bow and makes a very good backstop for paper targets. However, the hay bale will not last as long as a foam block target and the hay bale will have to be replaced frequently. Please use caution when making DIY targets.
