4. Morrell Outdoor Range Target - Best Bag Target

Morrell Outdoor Range Target

Our staff here at DeerHuntingGuide.net has tried just about every archery bag target on the market, including many from Morrell, and the Outdoor Range Target has consistently performed better than all of the rest for durability and ease of use.

The one downside with bag targets is that you cannot shoot broadheads into them, so you can only shoot field tips.

However, if you are using expandable broadheads, like Rage, they come with a practice tip that you can use with the bag targets, so that is not a concern.

The Outdoor Range Target is quite large at 31"tall by 29" wide and it is 14" deep with a patented multi layered density design and nucleus center that can stop arrows from compound bows up to 380 fps.

The weatherproof cover is extremely durable and can be left outside, which is good because this target is heavy, weighing in a 54 lbs. You do not want to be dragging this target in and out of the garage everyday.

This target features 50 shooting bullseyes and includes grommets for those of you that want to hang the target.

This target will last for thousands of shots, but if you do wear out the cover, Morrell offers a replacement cover that will restore this target to like new condition.

Things We Like:

  • Large size
  • 50 Shootable bullseyes
  • Durable

5. GlenDel Full-Rut Buck 3D Target  - Best 3D Deer Target

GlenDel Full-Rut Buck 3D Archery Target

When it comes to 3D targets, the Field Logic GlenDel Full Rut Buck Target is the largest and most realistic-looking target on the market. It has a total height of 62-inches.

It also has a durable foam construction, and it is lightweight and easy to use. You can move it from one point to another without any hassle.

This target can withstand shots from the fastest and most powerful compound bows. Although you can shoot anywhere, there is an insert core in the center that represents a buck’s vital organs. This part of the target measures 14x14x14 inches.

You can shoot more than a thousand arrows in it without worrying about any damage. The impenetrable foam core will stop arrows immediately. You can shoot broadheads and field points into it. However, after shooting broadheads into this target for a while , you get chunks of foam falling out. That is when the replaceable core comes in handy.

Arrow removal can be somewhat difficult and this target can be left outside in your backyard, although I do have a word of caution from personal experience.

This is my personal favorite target and I use it all the time. Last year I had this target set up in my backyard and it was mid November, middle of deer season. I went outside one morning to find the target in multiple pieces all over my yard.

It was during the peek of the rut and one of my resident big bucks decided that he didn't like this intruder in his territory, so he attacked it!

That's how life like 3D targets are. It is so realistic that it can be effectively used as a deer decoy

I was able to put the target back together and still use it, but I wish I had a trail camera set up on it because I would have loved to have seen the action unfold.

Things We Like:

This target is ideal for the bowhunter that wants to be well prepared for the next hunting season.

Just be forewarned that if you leave it outside during the rut, you may wake up to a surprise in the morning.

Are you tired of struggling to pull arrows out of foam targets?

The SpyderWeb target is the answer.

Even at speeds over 400 fps, you will never have to use an arrow puller or lube again.

The secret is in the revolutionary Spylar woven cover that is used on the target.

The Spylar consists of complex woven strands that spread apart when shot, similar to layered foam targets, and you can simply run your hand over the hole and the strands go back together, eliminating the hole.

No more ruined fletching because your arrow or bolt penetrated too far into the target!

It has six sides with two shootable sides. There are circular targets on the front and deer vitals on the back that allow you to hone your hunting skills.

Power-Stop Archery Target

The bold black and white design of the Power Stop American Excelsior Target is not only visually appealing but it helps you to focus while aiming, making this target a great addition to your backyard archery range.

The thing we like most about this target is its light weight, coming in at only 9 lbs, and with a convenient carrying handle, making it the best portable target in our roundup, but don't let the light weight fool you. This target is big on features.

The Power Stop target features six shootable sides. Its front side has large targets to hone your archery skills, while the backside has a battleship game to test your accuracy. You will find the top, bottom, and sides unprinted.

Because four of the sides are left blank, it’s possible to attach a paper target or paint one according to your preference.

I used this target when my kids were beginners and just getting involved in archery. We would blow up balloons and attach them to the unprinted parts of this target and my kids would try to pop the balloons.

It was a fun game and a great way to keep kids and beginners interested for longer periods of time.

This durable foam target uses total surface bonding technology. Its high-density polyethylene foam layers ensure brilliant stopping power and reusability. It can tolerate the impact from hundreds of shots easily.

Types of Archery Targets

Crossbow Targets

Click the link above for the best archery targets that effectively stop crossbow bolts.

When choosing an archery target, you will come across a wide range of types of targets. Each one offers a unique set of pros and cons. Below is an overview of the three fundamental target types.

Bag Targets

Bag style archery target

A bag target is a large bag filled with synthetic fiber that stops arrows quickly with relatively little penetration. The removal of arrows is usually easy.

Since it's a bag, archers have a large shooting surface to practice with, but the downside is that these can't be used as broadhead targets.

RELATED: Bear Grizzly Recurve Review

Foam Targets

Foam Block Target

Most archery targets are made out of some type of foam. There are two types of foam targets: solid block and layered foam targets. The solid foam blocks are more weatherproof and durable. However, the ease of arrow removal is better in layered foam targets.

Both types are comprised of high-density plastic foam that offers excellent stopping power.

Foam targets make the best broadhead targets.

These targets are very durable and will last longer when used for daily shooting sessions for both crossbows and compound bows.

3D Targets

3D Archery Target

3D targets refer to those that are designed to look like life-sized animals so that the archer can practice their hunting skills. Unlike bullseye targets, they have vital zones marked to improve hunting.

They are quite expensive, but you can shoot both field points and broadheads and shooting at a realistic target while looking through your bow sight is a great way to get ready for hunting the real thing.

These are our favorite targets for preparing an archer for bow hunting.

They are great targets for recurve bows and compound bows.

Homemade Targets

Homemade archery target

When I was a kid, we just used a bale of hay as an archery target. Sometimes we would draw a bullseye on a piece of paper and put that on a hay bale. Paper targets were simple to repace when they wore out from too many shots. That was the ultimate homemade target. Of course, we also made our own bows out of native wood, without fancy arrow rests.

RELATED: AF Archery Longbow Review

With today's high powered compound bows, homemade targets are not really recommended due to safety factors, but if you choose a recurve bow, a hay bale may be all you need.

If you do decide to try your hand at making DIY archery targets, make sure that the foam or stuffing is capable of stopping an arrow from your bow.

Here's a cool video that shows how to make a homemade target.

What To Look For When Buying the Best Archery Targets

Deciding what type of archery target you would like is just the first step in the purchasing process. There are still some factors that you should consider in order to get the right target for your situation.

Shootable Sides

Rinehart 18-1 archery target

Different targets feature different numbers of sides for shooting. Typically, targets have two, four, or six sides. However, some 3D targets, like the Rinehart Broadhead Target mentioned above, have 18 sides.

Besides the number of sides, you should also consider the designs printed on the target, which can range from simple circles to intricate deer vitals. You may also find targets with multiple design types.

RELATED: SAS Explorer Recurve Bow Review

Quality

Morrell Outdoor Range Target

It's important to choose a target that has a durable build. The product should be able to withstand the impact of arrows as well as weather. If the durability seems average, ensure that the target has a replaceable core or cover.

Archery targets that have replaceable covers are excellent because you don’t have to spend the money to purchase an entirely new target.

All of the best archery targets featured in our reviews above are high quality, durable archery targets that will last for years.

RELATED: TideWe Recurve Bow Review

Stopping Power

bigshot titan broadhead target

Different targets have different arrow speed limits. Generally, you will find a limit of 350 feet per second or fps, 450 fps, or 500 fps.

Apart from speed, also examine the target compatibility. Does the target work well with field tip arrows or broadhead arrows? Can you use mechanical broadheads?

You will come across archery targets that range from limited to versatile compatibility. While limited ones offer optimum performance for one particular arrowhead type, the versatile ones allow you to broaden your skill set.

The target with the best stopping power in our tests was the BigShot Archery Titan.

Arrow Removal

Spyderweb ST 18 Archery Target

The ease of arrow removal depends on the target material. Layered foam usually allows for easiest arrow removal, while synthetic fibers cause arrows to get stuck. Some targets even require you to purchase a separate tool to remove arrows.

Be sure to look for a target that features easy arrow removal.

All of our targets reviewed above feature easy arrow removal, but we found the SpyderWeb ST-14XL Target to be the best archery target for easy, two finger arrow removal.

Portability

Power-Stop Archery Target

Most archery targets are heavy and difficult to move. If you want to move your target frequently, you should opt for a lightweight and compact target. Look for carrying handles that make handling and transportation easy and allow you to carry a bow in your other hand.

That way you can grab your target with one hand and your bow case with the other and head to the range.

In our testing, we found the Power-Stop American Excelsior Target to be the best portable archery target that also had all of the other features that we look for in a target.

FAQ

How Long Do Archery Targets Last?

The lifespan of archery targets depends on usage frequency and build quality. On average, a target lasts around three to four years. However, when maintained, some targets can last up to six to seven years. If the cover of your target can be replaced, this heavily increases its longevity. Proper care of all your hunting gear will insure a long life.

What Archery Targets Last The Longest?

Foam block targets last the longest. The self healing foam target can withstand thousands of shots and can be used on a daily basis. Foam targets are also impervious to the weather, unlike bag targets, that will eventually need the cover replaced.

Can You Leave A Block Target Outside?

Yes you can leave a block target outside. We leave them outside in the backyard for multiple seasons and in all weather conditions. You will see some weathering after a couple of years, but the integrity of the target will not be compromised.

Will A Hay Bale Stop A Compound Bow?

Yes a hay bale will stop a compound bow and makes a very good backstop for paper targets. However, the hay bale will not last as long as a foam block target and the hay bale will have to be replaced frequently. Please use caution when making DIY archery targets.

What Type of Targets Are Used in Olympic Archery?

Olympic archery uses stationary circular targets placed at various distances, such as 70 meters and 50 meters. All archers have to aim at targets with five colors that consist of 10 scoring zones.

How High Should Your Archery Target Be?

Typically, the target center should be at least 48 inches from the ground. However, it depends on your particular archery style and skill level. Archers who hunt, shoot at targets on the ground or at buck level.

Final Thoughts

Archery targets make great gifts for hunters, it doesn't matter whether you have a right or left handed bow, having a high-quality and durable target along with a quality bow release is essential for improving your skill level.

Above, we have reviewed the best archery targets available on the market today. You should pick the target that best fits your specific needs and type of bow, compound bow vs recurve that you are going to use.
